Using EX2 Ultra drives as PC hard drives?

Hi all

Can anyone advise me on how I can use my two 4TB drives that are currently in my EX2 Ultra as PC storage? I am getting rid of my NAS and want to use the drives as they are fine.

As they are both empty I tried simply taking one out and attaching it to my PC and it did not recognize it or even feel like ot started up. I guess the drives need to be formatted in some way first but does this need to be done on the NAS or on the PC which may beb a problem if it doesn’t recognize it.

Many thanks

I put mine in a SATA slide in dock and then use the USB cable to PC

this way I don’t need a SATA connection and a power cable to the PC power supply.

PC disk management app should see the disk might need to check with device management app too.

The NAS drives are standard PC drives.

WD supplies “red” drives, which are rated slightly better than standard “blue” PC drives. (they are intended for 24/7/365 use; whereas the “blue” drives are not)

They should act as a normal drive, except that the NAS will format the drivers as EXT4 for linux applications. Windows will prefer NTFS and should prompt you to reformat.

You attach the drives physically with a SATA connection. This could take the form of a caddy, drive enclosure, or a SATA connection attached to the motherboard (with the drive mounted internally)

SATA power pin#3 is now defined as a Power Disable pin. You may need to defeat this pin before your drives will spin up.
