Using a 6TB WD Ext HD as a TiVo DVR Expander

I have 6 TB MY BOOK WDC External drive. S/N WD60000H2Q-00. Since it has the hardware requirements (eSATA connector,) I would like to connect it to my TiVo Bolt to expand recording memory. TiVo claims that the only drives they support are listed below.

Does Western Digital have any firmware that will allow this 6TB drive to be used as a TiVo DVR expander? It seems like the only difference between this HD and other eSATA drives is the size of its storage capacity. If I simply erase it and connect it to the powered off TiVo then restart everything, is there a danger in damaging the TiVo if it does not work?

At the time of this post there are no dedicated firmware updates available for DVR-compatibility purposes.

Hi, I was looking to expand my Tivo and have gotten multiple responses from Tivo Tech support whether I can use 1TB or more. Twice they said 1TB only and once they said 4TB would work. Is the compatibility really limited to 1TB? Then the price for My Book AV DVR Expander (1TB) was as high as $400 with 4TB much lower… Tech Support suggested buying/upgrading to Tivo Bolt+ to get 3TB of storage instead of 500GB on the Bolt I have that is 2 years old. Only problem is the Tivo Bolt+ doesn’t work with OTA signal we use from antenna. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks
