I purchased My Book Essential 1/10/2010 at Best Buys.  I transferred over 2000 pictures and confidential documents successfully to My Book. Today I tried to open my pictures/documents through My Book and was unable to retrieve the pictures, my unit is set up safely on my desk in my office, there has been no neglect to the unit. Went back to Best Buys and was told the mini USB to USB was loose inside the unit, they could replace the My Book Essential but would cost me $200 for the hard drive. The USB obviously had a problem when I purchased the product one month ago.  A very costly product, I would suggest to transfer materials on a CD/DVD.
