Will a USB 2.0 male to male cable work between the Cloud and my computer?

I tried connecting with a male to male adaptor and a USB extension cable which gave me a male to male cable. When plugged in, does not show any message on computer that it is connected to anything. Wondering if the adaptor works. 

Why did WD choose a female USB socket rather than the type found on printers, etc. I wonder.

No, the USB port is ONLY for expansion, it’s not for connecting to your PC.

I bougth a WD Cloud 4 TB. Instructions suggest using a USB cable o transfer large files. I looked at a Male A - Male A cable. Will this work. Any specific instructions how?
