USB back-up retrieving files

Dear Gents,

My question is simple, yet I did not manage to find an easy answer for it.

  1. I was able to successfully back-up some folders to an external USB-drive.
  2. At this point, I like to disconnect the USB-drive and hook it up to my laptop (running windows)
  3. But when I open the drive, it appears that nothing (no folder structure) is inside. However, the back-up is on the drive as I can see it the drive properties 60% of the capacity is written.
  4. I do understand, that windows might not be capable of reading the WD-format, and I might need to hook-up a Linux interface in getting the data.

#1 - But could anyone confirm this reasoning, and tell me what I need to pay attention to. My aim is to have the USB drive w/ me and take of data from time to time (in an easy way - if possible avoiding Linux)

#2 - Let’s say my cloud mirror brakes, and the disks are destroyed, but the USB back-up survives, how can I then easily upload again my content on a new WD-device

Both questions are kinda similar, but I wonder about it.

Really looking forward to hearing from you experts.

Sincerely yours.
