USB 3.0, Windows 7, and Western Digital drives

I have a western digital 1tb passport 0730 (usb 3.0 + 2.0) and recently purhcased another one (this time a 0740).

When using the drives with usb 2.0 connections, they do not cause any problems or issues.

However, when using the usb 3.0 connection there are a few issues:

  1. if i connect before powering on the computer, windows 7 recognizes it as an “unknown device.”  this is only fixed by unplugging and replugging in the drive

  2. intermittently when i connect the drive, the drive will either disconnect, or be recognized as a “usb mass storage device” that was unplugged while installing the driver, or be recognized as an unknown device.  again unplugging and replugging it in is the only way I’ve been able to get it to work

I am using the drives with an etron usb 3.0 controller on the desktop.

Any suggestions?

ng12345, have you tried checking the cables and if you have the latest Drivers for your USB 3.0 controller? You could also try updating the Firmware of your WD My Passport Essential Portable Hard Disk Drive.
