i got her a belkin n1 usb adapter -  http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000M8B036

it is in the accepted list… but it says ver.2xxxUK on it as well.

So its not picking up any networks at all… doesnt seem to be working… but its in the list

the hub has never had a firmware update so im wondering would this fix it…

yours in anticipation…

You may contact WD Support for USA and Canada at 1-800-275-4932, Monday - Thursday  8 am - 9 pm CST, Friday - Sunday 8 am - 7 pm CST.

The list says:

Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapter F6D8051 V3100
Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapter F5D8053 V3001
Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapter F7D1102tt 1000tt
Belkin Enhanced Wireless-N USB network adapter F6D4050 V1000
Belkin Enhanced Wireless-N USB network adapter F6D4050 V1000
Belkin N1 Surf & Share Wireless Adapter F7D2101 v1
Belkin Basic Wireless Adapter F7D1101 v1
Belkin Wireless N+ USB Adapter F5D8055 v2
Belkin Wireless N+ USB Adapter F5D8053 v4
Belkin Enhanced Wireless Adapter F6D4050 v2

You have purchased a Belkin N1 F5D8051uk ver.2xxxUK which is not on the list and that is probably why it is not working. Does your Mother have the latest firmware installed as this also adds more adaptors and may be needed to get your one working. The version number is also very important as the manufacturer sometimes changes the internal chip when update the version and the WD player can only support certain chips.

She has updated the firmware alright… still no joy…

can you upgrade the firmware on teh usb adapter at all?

Even if you could, that wouldn’t help.

The problem is that each actual chipset needs a different open-source driver.

The manufacturers buy 10,000 or 100,000 (or whatever number) of whatever chip is cheapest at the moment.  Then, their next round of purchasing, they may buy 10,000 or 100,000 (or whatever) of a different brand of chip that is functionally identical, and put it in the same “Model” of adaptor, but with a different version/revision.

Unless the WDTV has the correct driver for whatever chip they switched to, the WDTV can’t properly use the adaptor.

That’s why the revisions matter.  Just because one model worked, doesn’t guarantee future “versions” of it always will.

And, without an open-source driver for a new chip, WD kinda has their hands tied until a driver does exist for that chip.

cheers for your help… looks like a new one is needed…

hard to explain this all to her…

Just tell her it’s modern technology  and cost saving techniques! Good business, ah maybe, but it sure keeps people guessing.
