Upgrading Computer

I am upgrading a Windows 7 desktop, connected to a 1TB WD My Book Essential, to a Windows 8 laptop. If I want to keep some of my file directory naming the same on the new computer, how will the WD drive react and will all of the files created on the old computer be accessible by the new computer? Are there any recommended steps for me to take to ensure all of my data is available after the swap? Thanks.

FWIW I switch my My Book drives from my win 8 desktop to my Win 7 laptop without issue. Plug and play.  However, when I updated win 8 to 8.1 my 3TB My Book essential drives were no longer recognized.  My 1TB My Book drives had no problems.
