Update twonkyserver

Hi guys, sincerely I’m not so much familiar with linux… and now I’m using a tool on windows called “WinSCP”. I connected to My Book Live via FTP and I got access to /root , once i copyed the http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6.0.38/twonkymedia-powerpc-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.38.zip content into it, how do I copy the /usr/…twonkymedia5 to /usr/twonkymedia-6.0… I can’t see this folder, I can only access the /root one. Help please :stuck_out_tongue:

Follow the instruction from page 13 (since you can SSH, start from step 12):

Instruction updated for 6.0.38

  1. In your web browser go to your WD My Book Live Local Network Interface at: YOUR MYBOOK LIVE IP ADDRESS/UI (ie: http://192.168.0.xxx/UI))

  2. Go to “Settings”

  3. Go to “Utilities”

  4. Go to “Import/Export Current Configuration”, then click “Save Config File”.

  5. Open saved file with a text editor ie: notepad.

  6. In the text file look for "ssh_enable=“disabled” and change to "ssh_enable=“enabled” and save.

  7. Go back to the Import/Export Current Configuration and import the file you just edited. This now enables SSH on your drive for the Putty program to work.

  8. To to Setting->Media and turn off TWONKY Service (uncheck enable)

  9. Download free Putty SSH software at: Http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

  10. Enter the My Book Live IP address (ie:192.168.0.xxx) in the Host Name box in Putty.

  11. The username is: root password is: welc0me (the O in welcome is the number ZERO)

  12. Just copy and paste the following commands in the terminal (the last command “mv” may produce a error, ignore it):

cd /usr/local/
mv twonkymedia-5 twonky5old
mkdir twonkymedia-5
cd twonkymedia-5
wget http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6.0.38/twonkymedia-powerpc-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.38.zip
unzip twonkymedia-powerpc-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.38.zip
mv /usr/local/sbin/writeTwonkyContentDir.sh /usr/local/sbin/writeTwonkyContentDir.sh.old
reboot

  1. After reboot enable the TWONKY service from Settings->Media. You can also configure TWONKY with LIVE IP ADDRESS:9000 i.e… http://192.168.0.xxx:9000/

  2. If you have a license then put it there to register the 30 day trial version. I can verify that version 5 serial works.

  3. Enjoy !

16 Optional) If you have a Samsung TV you may need to set “SAMSUNG TV” on config twonky (http://yourip:9000/config) for media receiver. The problem is that for each media receiver the access to the server can be restricted, and the Twonky can’t detect Samsung TV automatically sometimes.

Thanks for the fast answer. I appreciate it : D

I’m trying now… i’ll let you know how it goes.

EDIT: Done! Thank you so much

And… now I can use this twonky version for… 30 days right?

What “I can verify that version 5 serial works” means? I don’t understand >_<. You can use the version 5 license that i had previously for it? And how?

@jumper1

14) If you have a license then put it there to register the 30 day trial version. I can verify that version 5 serial works.

Did you buy it, or you mean the one coming by default installed in MBL? If so, how did you get the license?

No you have to buy it.

Hi, firstly, thanks to all who have contribted to helping get around this problem.

I have just gone through the process outlined on page 6, but used version 38 instead and although I had to use a combination of Putty and WinSCP to get it done, the files appear to be where they should be.

I have managed to unzip all the files into the necessary folders on my MBL, but after turning Twonky back on and a reboot I can’t see the unit through my Samsung TV and in the Twonky tab on the dashboard all the details are blank, even after a rescan and rebuild.

I still have access to my files through Windows, but my TV still cand see the MBL.

Is there anyone able to assist?

Thanks,

Karl.

Redo the entire process and follow the instruction mentioned in this page. Should fix your problem.

The problem I’m having is that when I get to download step I get this error:

Resolving www.twonkyforum.com… 63.241.31.158
Connecting to www.twonkyforum.com|63.241.31.158|:80… connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 404 Not Found
2012-02-01 20:42:23 ERROR 404: Not Found.

I used WinSCP to just copy the unzipped files to the location they needed to go to.

The procedure doesn’ seem to work to well for me…

Hmm, that should not be happening. The file is definitely there, I just checked. Can you try this?

wget " http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/6.0.38/twonkymedia-powerpc-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.38.zip"

Unfortunately I get the same error message.

The only way for me to get the files into the correct directory is to FTP them there which works.

But what then?  After a reboot, I get nothing, and I also cannot access the unit via the http://yorip:9000/config command.

And as stated before the twonky media version and status info is missing altogether…

Now I can’t even get my .mpg’s on my tv, letalone my .mkv’s!!

I’m a bit stuck now!

Well it should still work. Do the other steps serially:

cd /usr/local/
mv twonkymedia-5 twonky5old
mkdir twonkymedia-5
cd twonkymedia-5

FTP the file at this stage and make sure the file is in the /usr/local/twonkymedia-5 directory****

unzip twonkymedia-powerpc-glibc-2.2.5-6.0.38.zip
reboot

Jumper1 you are a legend.

Twonky is now all updated to v38.

Not sure what is going at the moment, but I assume the database is rebuilding as the green light is flashing and has been for ages.  I do have 2TB of data on a 3TB box, so I gather it might take a while?

Hope it’s all good once it finishes.

Thanks to all for the assistance on this forum.  It is much appreciated.

Karl.

@karlos879

If you access the web interface (http://mybooklive:9000) you can see the process, which files are being analyzed and how many have been detected so far.

Is it  better to use 6.0.39 instead of v38?

Thanks, I have managed to connect via web browser, but it’s been running for a day now and not much seems to be happening.  It says that it is in progress, but does not display the number of files it has found so far - all are at 0.  The TV also tells me that there are no video files there.  How long does the database rebuild take?  And do I do the rescan content diectories or rebuild database?

Thanks,

Karl.

Depending on how many media files you have, it may take few minutes to few hours but should never take a day. Go to TWONKY config:

http://192.168.1.xx:9000/config

Select sharing from the left menu and change the content location to “'/nfs/Public”. Click save changes and reboot the WD device.

Should fix your issue.

All fixed now.  Massive thank you.

I now have what it was I thought I paid for in the beginning!

Regards,

Karl.

When I go into my Twonky config it says my trial has expired, but it still streams fine.  That normal?

But if there is something out there to improve the functionality between your devices ( I’m using the WDTV PLUS SMP and a 3T Mybooklive) then wouldn’t it make sense to improve the product.  If I could update the Twonky Server on Mybooklive and display album art in folder settings then it would be all the more easier to promote these newer technologies to a larger audience.  I just can’t do that now with the limitations it presents. Having a 3T is nice but if it doesn’t have the complete functionallity I want then it really isn’t worth my time or the time of others who seek my opinion.  If I knew how to update Twonky I would, I feel the features people speak of are worth the risk and time to me.

I updated to 6.0.39 about 30 min ago & everything is working; probably will be buying a license tomorrow as it is “only” $19.95, less than the cost of a linux book.  Too bad WDC didn’t won’t release the key for the MBL especially since I read here that there are no plans to update Twonky now or in the future.

I see that the cataloge display on my AV receiver has been changed since 5.x; also I see the ability to include radio(!) & Shoutcast; don’t know if this is with a media player; haven’t check it out yet as the receiver already has the ability.

One thing I do see that may be nice is a Twonky browser when in MBL:9000; will be checking it out to see if I can change meta-tags for albums, tho very unlikely.

Does the previous 6.0.x ver also have the “Twonky browser”?  and getting at HD radio & internet streaming?

I don’t think 6.x will solve my problem of being able to access from the AV receiver for more than 2 hrs after boot-up in the morning (I do a shutdown at night)  as I’ve mention in another thread.  However, found that if I just disconnect the cable & let the MBL led go to “red” (disconnect from network), then reconnect the cable, the AV receiver is able to access, play music, for hours.  Very strange indeed.  Will try to see if I’m the only one with this condition.
