Unlocking a passport

I just bought a passport to backup  the time machine feature on my MacBook Air (1st generation).  How do I unlock the passport?

A brand new passport shouldn’t be locked at all.  Was it a return item that you bought?  And if so, then you will need to error out the password I think 5 times, then it will give you the option to format the drive and remove the password.
