Understanding speeds

I’m hoping someone can help me with this question.

I’m trying to understand why thunderbolt 3 is 40Gbps but the LaCie Bolt3 that claims to be a thunderbolt 3 drive has speeds up to 2800MBs which equals roughly 20Gbps which is thunderbolt 2 speeds.

Also the G-Tech slim SSD USB-C drive which is USB 3.1 and should be 10Gbps says it’s 540MB/s which is actually 4.28Gbps which is less than USB 3.0 speeds.

Can someone help me understand this?

Thank you.

Those are bandwith top speeds that the interface is capable of. Not the drive.

Drives move much slower than the interface top end speed. That is why we give real world numbers and up to specs.

Thank you!
