Unable to Write to New 2TB Drive

I just bought a new ‘Mhy Passport Ultra’, 2TB USB disk drive and connected it to my iMac running IOS Sierra. Computer is unable to copy files to the hard drive. If I try to drag a file to the drive from my computer hard drive, that drag operation fails. If I try to do a normal backup using Syncovery for iMac, which has worked successfully for years, that generates errors without copying any files. If I use the iMac Disc Utlitiy, that also fails to initialize the drive.

Not sure what is going on here. I have another WD USB drive working away with no problem. Only this new one seems to be locked up in some way.

Any ideas appreciated.

The My Passport Ultra comes formatted for Windows out of the box. It would be read only on Mac. If you are getting a failure to initialize, There could be a problem in that Disk Utility cannot format the drive. Try using the Erase drive option in Disk Utility to reformat the drive. Unplug any other drives so you do not accidentally reformat the wrong one.
