Unable to setup FTP

Hello, I have been trying for the past 2 days just about everything under the sun to get my FTP up and running. I have a 4TB Mirror (firmware 2.21.126) that works just fine on my local network. I am trying to set it up for outside my network.

I have:

  • Turned on access and port forwarding is saying its active (see image at bottom)
  • Turned on FTP and FTP access to all shared folder with proper user permissions within the Mirror (see image below)
  • I have enabled port forwarding for several ports on my TP-Link Archer C9 (see attached image).
  • I have set my Mirror to be on a static IP 192.168.0.108
  • I have turned on passive mode with opened ports (see image at bottom):
  • I have added Inbound rules in Windows firewall to allow ports 20-44, 2121, 8020-8044 to be open
  • I have added (and deleted) port forwarding within the Cloud Mirror (see image at bottom)
  • I have tried everything with port 21 with no luck. I have gotten closer on port 2121, which is what my Mirror’s FTP setting is currently at
  • I am attempting to log in with my admin user/pass and my computers host IP 24.XXXXXXX
  • When I go to https://ftptest.net/ I get error messages (see image at bottom):
  • When I try connecting through other clients I get “connection closed without indication”
  • I have rebooted the router and Mirror several times
  • I have Charter Internet and I have not found any indication of them blocking ports
  • I have lost track on the combination of settings above I have tried.
  • I have looked at just about every topic on this forum and WD knowledge base hasn’t helped
  • I have emailed WD, but I haven’t gotten a response back yet

What am I missing? Why won’t the FTP work??

Even if this may work for other FTP devices, try using your public IP address (The IP address your router reports to the Internet).

Additionally, I’d recommend double-checking the steps in the following guide:

https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=2680

My public IP address is the one i’m trying. I’ve reviewed that knowledge link and lots of others several times. No dice.

A quick update. I spoke with tech support and these are the changes that we made:

  1. changed port forwarding on the mirror and router to 80 (http), 443 (https), 21 (ftp) for both service AND internal port numbers. This was different from using 9443, 8082, and 8021 as was suggested by many people
  2. Rebooted both
  3. Changed FTP client language to western european instead of unicode! (did not see that mentioned ANYWHERE)

End result, able to remote into my mirror by FTP.
