Unable to login to network shares

New to WDTV Live devices and installed the unit fine today.

Network DHCP’d off my router fine and could setup the network shares - entered username & password as connecting directly to files on my WinXP Pro pc.

Able to play all media so very pleased.

It was on an old version of firmware - don’t now recall which version but perhaps 1.1.X.X or similar. Saw the prompt to update to newer firmware and it in fact ended up doing another update after further prompting.

Now on 1.4.10 but no longer able to setup network shares. I’ve followed the user manual. Goto Video and scroll until I get Network Share icon and press Enter but nothing - nada - zip. Same is true for any other media type.

Nothing had changed from my other devices so had to assume the firmware has stuffed it over.

I have :-

  1. Restored to 1.1 / 1.2 / 1.3 versions of firmware.

  2. Reset the unit including full power cycle after each update.

  3. Reset to Factory Settings after each update.

  4. Re-entered my Workgroup info correctly each time.

  5. Can ping the WDTV Live from the hosting pc.

  6. Now uninstalled ALL a/v & firewall software from pc (even though it worked with this in place orignally).

  7. Left Windows Firewall off.

  8. Checked that drives have been shared with full permissions. This is not the fault as I’ve been using Tversity and another manufacturers media player until now and things have been shared no problem.

  9. Am using ONLY cat5e wired connection.

  10. Can use Youtube etc. so web & network connection is valid & good.

Help anyone ?

It worked fine before the firmware upgrades…

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply. I had already trawled through those two posts.

I’m not using any Windows Live Essentials and this whole affair broke in 20mins from old firmware and working to 1.4.10v and not working. Nothing was changed on the pc (certainly no Windows Updates as they are on notify only) only the firmware was changed.

I scroll to Video - Network Share and when I press Enter nothing happens - it no longer gives me any option to enter username & password.

I’ve also posted this query to WD support as well. It can ONLY be put down to a firmware issue as nothing else was changed.

Shame really as the device rocked when first installed !

Have you tried turning off the ‘Auto login to network share’ and  Clear the login for network share. This enables you to start again. Are you also saying that you click on the network shares icon but this takes you no further (you see no shares)

I had to disable authentication on my Linux NAS to get firmware later than 1.02 working with a file share.  This has created other permissions issues for me that I now have to resolve.  However, from all the issues I’ve read here, it seems to me the Samba authentication on the Live is perhaps a bit buggy.

Yeah I just purchased my web tv as well, and was doing fine, up until today when  I upgraded the firmware.  Im having the same problem and I know it cant be any firewall settings or network connectivity because nothing change.  I literally watched one show, upgraded the firmware, and now nothing.

I think you guys at WD have to address this problem ASAP. Atleast with the latest 1.04.10 version.

The ONLY way I got it to connect to network share (at a Linux samba server) was to allow anonymous logons and having the WDTV to auto logon with the logon info cleared.

Not ANY, ANY, manual logon to network works. Not even with the default “anonymous” (which somehow do work when autologon is enabled)!

I tested the shares and the desired user name from a Wintendo machine and it works just fine from there. I also applied some additional settings for Samba that I found here. Something with the manual logon in WDTV is totally broken.

I’m currently having this same issue. I have two Windows machines and a Mac. Since I upgraded the firmware last week, the Live Plus can’t see either Windows machine at all, but can see the Mac just fine.

One of the Windows machines is my media server and, until the firmware upgrade, worked just fine with the Live Plus. Nothing outside the firmware upgrade was changed.

update

I have been playing around with it a little bit, and again, I made no changes on my end., I just made a different selection, choose  Media Server option, It sees my pc, and then I can drill down to the folders. But I try to view through network shares nothing.  Man I just wish I  didnt update the firmware.  This was the first product (As far as looking at personal digital media files) that worked right out the box.  I had it up and running within 5 minutes of me unwrapping it.   I guess that will be my work around for right now.
