When I connect WD My Passport Ultra hard drive to laptop, my computer page keeps on loading without ever completely loading to give the storage information on the external drive. Sometimes, windows explorer page freezes and the drive, not even it’s name loads. I have important information on the drive and don’t want to lose it. Please suggest how to solve this issue.
Solutions tried:
-
Checked the Windows Disk Management, and the information is not loaded here as well
-
Tried with friend’s laptops with different OS varying from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Not loaded in any of them.
Laptop: Asus P50IJ
OS: Windows 10
Hard Disk: My Passport Ultra 1 TB
Thanks,
Viswanath.
Welcome to the Community.
Did you try changing the USB cable as well? If so, then it may be an early sign of disk drive failure. I’d advise against further drive usage in order to minimize unit harm while you proceed to contact a specialized data recovery service company.

Hi Trancer,
Thanks for the advice. No, I haven’t changed the USB cable, and I do not have a spare one. But, I have tried changing different USB ports (2.0, 3.0) and the light on the drive is blinking with a sound like disk rotation is coming from the drive. If the reason to try different USB cable is to see whether the drive is powered, I can say that it is. Otherwise kindly let me know whether I should try changing the cable before contacting a data recovery service company.
Thank you,
Viswanath.
Yes. Replacing the USB cable is a a recommended troubleshooting step.
Hi Trancer,
Sorry for the late reply, it took me time to collect the USB cable from my friend and test with my drive. Unfortunately, the drive is not working with the new cable either. It leaves me to contact the data recovery service companies that you suggested in your early reply.
Is it sure that the drive has been compromised and if it is what could’ve been the reason? I have handled the drive very carefully all the time.
Thanks,
Viswanath.
