Unable to access files on laptop transferred from WD Passport external drive

I backed up files from my old laptop to the external drive, and have successfully transferred some of them to my new laptop.  However, I’m unable to access them.  For  example, when I try to play a song, I receive this message from Windows Media Player:  Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.  I don’t know how to fix this.  Any help would be much appreciated!    

Search out permissions and taking ownership for Windows and see if they help.

Thanks for responding.  For one of the files in questiion, it appears I have full control if I go to Properties → Security   → Permissions tab and Sharing tab.  See the above screenshots.  Is there somewhere else I need to go to give myself permission?
