Unable to access external disk

I am not able to access data on my 160GB Western Digital USB 2.0 external disk. It does not show in My Computer folder. It shows when I point at or double click the Safely Remove Hardware button (for unplugging USB devices) but with no drive letter. The disk does not show in Disk Management. The USB cable works well with other devices like my Alcatel cell phone. The problem occurs when I plug the disk in other computers. My computer is running on XP SP3.

I swapped controllers with a second disk (LightWave). My disk still behaves (or is it misbehaves) the same. The controller from my disk works well on the second disk.

HELP!!
