Ubuntu + Android device

I just bought one with the only purpose of using it as a backup for family pictures taken with the mobile phone. And I am really dissapointed.

My laptop runs Ubuntu, so first dissapointment is that software is only for Windows and Mac.

Second try was to try to connect to the device connecting it via USB, but I have read that it doesn’t work that way.

So I managed to connect via network share, and now I can move files but at a very very slow rate via Wifi. Also, if I connect the mobile phone to my laptop, I cannot move files to the drive. I first need to move them to a laptop folder and then to the NAS. I’ve read that I could connect directly the phone to the WD My Cloud, but then I need the app to transfer files…

My question is:

Is there a way to move  files directly from my Android mobile phone to the WD My Cloud in Ubuntu at a good rate? I cannot beleive that such a simple operation can be so hard to do it.

Was there any mention of Ubuntu support on the packaging…?

You don’t need to install any software to configure the MyCloud; use the web-based ‘Dashboard’ interface.

If you want to use remote access, it can be done via a web interface, using wd2go.com

It’s a Network Attached Storage unit, intended to be connected to an Ethernet network, I.e. your router. It’s not a USB hard drive.

If you want relatively fast data transfer, don’t use WiFi; use a hard-wired gigabit Ethernet connection.

[edit: my apologies for this post; I was in a particularly grumpy mood last night, and saw only a series of somewhat unfounded criticisms. Hopefully, the links should help you use and understand your MyCloud]

I just used a program called ES File Explorer and connected my android phone to my My Cloud device.

With ES File explorer you can copy files between different devices/folders etc.

For Android access, I use Cheetah Mobile’s File Manager.

You can use the free Android  WD Photo app and the free Android  My Cloud app to backup photos taken on an Android device to the WD My Cloud.

You can use a file manager program (like the free  ES File Explorer) on the Android to copy the Android device contents direcctly to the WD My Cloud network attached storage without going through a PC.
