Trying to decide whether to keep new MyCloud Home (that I can't even use yet)

Hi

So Western Digital got hacked literally as my new MyCloud Home was being shipped!

I’m trying to decide whether to keep the product or not, not that I can even return it yet. The Western Digital store are refusing returns until the hack’s sorted. I’ve raised a dispute with both PayPal and my credit card company.

Putting aside the fact a data storage company allowed themselves to get so spectaculalry and disastrously hacked, I like the product in principal and I got a recertified device for a great price.

It’s good to see that WD have published a workaround for exsting users to access local files (no use to new users as we can’t register yet).

My question is, will this function always be available? It was my impression you always had to have an internet connection to use these products?

Note! I ONLY want to use it as a local NAS drive. I’m not interested in any of the cloud features.

Thanks
Jim

Time to look at Synology NAS products!!!

Sure, but I got the MyCloud Home 6Tb for £110 recertified!

At that price keep it - when it works it works - I’ve had a duo for years with no issues - makes a great Plex server (duo has better coy than single version and so works better for Plex).

Only use mine for Plex and some old files backup - had local connection already setup since they emailed me about it months ago - so apart from access from iOS or outside home not being available currently I ain’t had no issues.

Device is pretty locked down - lack of apps etc - so if you can live with that it sounds like you got a good deal. :+1:
