The new WD Remote iPhone app - no devices listed

I have installed the app on my iPhone 4 (latest ios) and latest firmware on the WDTV Live Hub. I can’t see my hub in the app’s Devices list.

Both devices are on same network, iPhone wirelessly, hub on cable.

Anyone?

Hello. You will need to have the latest FW (3.1.19) installed on the hub in order to be able to use the new app.

Uhm…

“I have installed the app on my iPhone 4 (latest ios) and latest firmware on the WDTV Live Hub”

I had the same problem with mine, it worked when i first installed the app, hasn’t worked since, and I’m on the newest firmware as well, on both devices.

Oops! Sorry I guess I should have read more carefully. I don’t know what else you could do that would help. Sorry.

I have the same problem! running iOS5 on my 3GS and the latest firmware on my Live HUB.

I would realy appreciate ome feedback from WD on this issue! At least give some more information on how the app works network wise (what port it uses, how the auth works send to and from the device), so i can try and see what the problem is. I do believe it has something to do with the kind of router used, and what firewall/port block settings are applied.

WD Photos app works fine btw

EDIT: I tried running another remote app (zappo-something) and its also not able to control my Hub, saying its ‘currently in use’ (it even says that not only when everything is stopped, but also when my device is turned off)

I’m trying the official WD Remote App on an iPod Touch. The iPod is running latest firmware from Apple and I’ve upgraded the WD TV Live Hub to the latest version (3.01.19). For several hours I had no devices detected. Eventually I powered off the WD TV Live Hub and brought it back up. The iPod then detected the device and I was able to use the app as advertised. I was just what I needed and worked really well, until … I used the red buuton in the App to put the WD TV Live Hub into sleep mode. It went to sleep alright, but since then my WD remote App has reverted to not seeing the Hub again!

I’ll play around with this a little longer because when it ran this appeared to be a good application, but my patience is running thin.

same problem here… the app won’t find the device! has anyone ever got this working? why release it to the market in this state? perhaps a little more testing is required???

The official WD Remote app did not work with the 3.00.xx firmware however when I upgraded to the latest 3.01.19 firmware it worked perfectly.

It works a bit like the longer existing Zappo.TV app but then with a remote feature and no advertisements.

The Zappo.TV always worked great to watch YouTube videos (mostly SD quality) on the tv but with that app you need to be in the Home screen and you should not run anything else. Then it works pretty nice (except for a crash of the app now and again).

However one major feature which i missed in both apps is the feature to watch video, photos and listen to audio from the WDTV Live Hub 1TB disk via WIFI on other devices such as iPhone/iPad. I did find the ‘AcePlayer’ in the Apple app store (1,59 euro) which could connect to the WD Live Hub and plays e.g. movies and tv series pretty well over WIFI 480p and I did try also 720p video. Both audio/video worked pretty well. I do have a high speed WIFI connection of 20MB.

I did not test the subtitles yet (separate .srt file or in the mkv/mp4 container itself).

I haven’t tested photos and audio yet.

I have a iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.01

Same here. I’m running the WDTV Remote on an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 and have a WDTV Live box (not the hub, the standalone, running the latest firmware), and the WDTV Live box doesn’t come up in the list of devices at all.

Sounds like the remote app is undercooked and shouldn’t have been released.

Hello pacorob. I use 8player on my iPad to access and play my mp3, which are stored on the Live Hub. I have enable both Twonky and DNLA servers and everything work great. I can also play avi (TV series) but it will not play mkv (movies) as of yet. 8player is also avail for the iPhone,iTouch. Hope this might help.

@Thecooldude thanks for the tip for 8player. I also mentioned AcePlayer app which can play/access music, photos and videos from the Live Hub HDD perfectly. It works also with mkv however it didn’t run smooth most of the times.

The mp4 and avi/mpg files and mp3, jpg worked pretty well and were streamed quite good.

I think it would be good if there was a list of all apps which work with the Live Hub and what they can do and this list is a sticky topic here on the forum. Below is a setup of such a list.

For now there is:

WDPhotos (official app) / free for iOS/Android, no ads - Upload photos/videos from your mobile phone/ipod/ipad to the Live Hub and store/play them there.

WD Remote (official app) / free for iOS/Android, no ads - Great as a 2nd remote and for launching various Internet services

Zappo.Tv / free for iOS, ads - Great for quick searching YouTube (better then the real wd remote) videos and show via the Live Hub on your tv

WDTVMedia (from Zappo) / free for iOS, ads - I think this is almost the same as the Zappo TV app

AcePlayer / iOS 1,59 euro, no ads - Uses UPNP/DLNA to connect to WDTV Live Hub and access/play audio (e.g mp3), photos (e.g. jpg) and video (e.g. mp4, mpg, avi, xvid, and even mkv).

  • mkv does not always runs smooth

  • photos are very small. Also zooming does not show the full size photo

Or you could have an Android Phone and Tablet

And play all your files with free apps.

I use ES File Explorer and MX Video player. No messing about.

You can keep your rotten Apples :o).

Doesn’t seem to work for me either… “WD TV Live Streaming Media Player” (aka gen 3, if I’m not mistaken) with 1.05.18 (latest)

iPhone 3GS 5.0.1.

The Remote app doesn’t list any device. Can we type the ip address ourselves in the future… just in case…

The WD TV is connected via ethernet to a Thomson Gateway from my TV/internet provider… I’ve checked the router, disabled anything that might interfere but still nothing… and my computer sees WD TV just fine.

Are you able to bring up the WD’s webpage on Safari?

Same problem, 2 wdtv lives-s, none of them listed neither on my iphone, nor on the ipad, both latest os, just as the wd-s with the latest firmware.  Support would be much appreciated…

Yes, on the iPhone. I even tryed that web remote but doesn’t work very well on the phone

You might try fully power-cycling the iPhone…
