Synology regularly dropping 8 TB Red Pro disks

Our Synology RS18016xs+ loses connectivity regularly to one of the ten WD 8TB Red Pro drives. The RAID-set consists of two Samsung 2TB 850 Pro SSDs as cache and ten WD8001FFWX-68J1UN0 SATA disks.

According to Synology this is a known problem resolved by replacing all disks by WD for ones from a newer batch.

Anyone can confirm this???

I’m having the same issue with a WD 6TB Red Pro. It was purchased to run VMware Virtual Machines. I had the drive in a ZFS raid mirror (4 disks) but it disconnected so often during writes or heavy activity that I decided to test as a standalone drive. I tested the following scenarios as a standalone drive, not in a RAID set:

  • disconnects from internal SATA port at random (Dell Precision Workstation T3500)
  • disconnects from external eSATA single drive enclosure at random (OWC Mercury Elite Pro)
  • disconnects from eSATA docking station at random (Thermaltake BlacX)

I tried to test with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics but the WD Red Pro’s are NOT recognized. The software is probably for consumer drives only. I’m going to contact WD this Friday. I’ll keep everyone posted.
