Switching on and off hard drives is a big stress and reduces the durability / reliability?

In general, switching on and off (external) USB (2.0, 3.0) hard drives (2,5" and 3,5") is said to be a big stress and to reduce the durability / reliability negatively on them? Is that really true?

If yes, what would that mean for the settings for / in drives and / or Windows? How should one adapt them? What does that mean for the use of drives?

Hello,

Normally it is good to have the unit turned off if it is not being user at a certain time, however USB drives from WD normally do not have Power button, except for older models. In my opinion is if better to have the drive turned off it there is nothing being done with the drives.
