Suggestions for setting up a password of an almost full external WD 4TB

Does anyone know how long it would take to set up a password of an almost full external WD 4TB?
Specifically, does each file gets its own encryption, or the HDD as a whole, using the WD Security software? My hope is that the WD Software in NOT file/size dependent, so it wouldn’t matter of the file stored.
