Strange folder names

Hello. So I just plugged in my WD external hard drive yesterday to do some routine file swapping and whatnot on my Windows XP computer, but when I plugged the drive in… all of these folders with strange names like █x]Θ]n’'.X│W or ▓<{m∩m¼.S@

If I try to open the folders I get an error saying: (folder name) is not accessible. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

This makes sense because the folders are named strangely.

Every time I try to do an error scan of my drive the scan pauses very close to the end for hours and never finished. Also, every time I open my drive to see the files those strangely named folders seem to keep multiplying! It wouldn’t be so much of a problem if these folders didn’t have some obscure data amount in them. I know this has happened before to some people… but I haven’t been able to find anyone with a good solution to this.

Can someone help?

Thank you in advance.
