Just donèt buy it. This is one of the worst buys you would ever make. Go on smallbuilder.net and check out their NAS reviews and pick something better.
The ShareSpace should be avoided like the plague.

Hi,
as far as the speed is concerned, it depends on the size of files you transfer.
I have a Gigabit network with good switches and good NT equipment, so I don’t think my LAN is a limiting factor.
But when I transfer large files, I never get more than 10 MB/s peak
And when I transfer small files (which is what I usually do: documents etc.) I get around 1 MB/s (!)
That is NO exaggeration and is a value that countless other users experience, too.
As far as the reliability is concerned: my Sharespace has been working thus far but here’s the killer:
Should something, ANYTHING, fail, WD does NOT provide ANY type of support or hints or help AT ALL.
The standard answer for EVERYTHING is: reset the machine (which means: all your files are lost)
If your RAID fails: reset your machine & lose your data (because WD does not provide any recovery tool)
If a HD fails and the RAID rebuild fails: reset your machine & lose your data (because WD doesn’t provide and rebuild tool)
If the web GUI doesn’t respond and you can’t access the box: reset your machine & lose your data (because WD does not provide a tool to fix that issue without deleting all your data)
If a firmware upgrade fails and you can’t access your box anymore: reset your machine & lose your data (because WD does not provide a tool to rebuild the firmware without deleting everything first)
This list could be continued for pages - but the bottom line is always the same:
if speed is no issue AT ALL + if the WD never fails for ANY reason, it could be considered suitable (although expensive)
However, if ANYTHING goes wrong, you’re screwed and entirely on your own. Nobody will help you. Especially not the support of WD.
So as far as the reliablity thing is concerned, you really have to bet on the Sharespace NEVER failing for ANY reason. And as countless posts in this forum prove, the four problems mentioned above occur over and over again.
And the “help” from WD is always the same: reset & lose everything.
So I am with the previous poster: you should avoid the Sharespace.
I bought mine immediately before other companies started to introduce ATOM based NAS systems which were a bit more expensive but also 10x faster without the HD limitations the Sharespace experienced.
I really tried to make it work for me and my approach was:
Don’t ever touch the box (I never upgrade my firmware, I never play around with the settings)
Always have a recent backup handy (even though the built in backup function does NOT work, btw)
I think I have been lucky that I never experienced the kind of trouble other users had. But I won’t count on it for forever.
Today (2 1/2 years after I bought my box), there are better, faster and more reliable alternatives out there that offer more features (e.g. working backup options, tools to automatically keep the drive in sync with online disk space, properly working media servers etc.) with a support who will actually try to help AND who will supply you with recovery tools if necessary.
So yes: I own a 4 TB Sharespace but I can’t recommend it at all.
And I would not buy another one.
For not much more money there are far better and faster NAS boxes.
For about the same or less you can easily build yourself a nice little file server.
Simple really.
