"Snappyness" of interface

Hello!

Many times users complain about the interface of the WDTV lagging behind.

By chance I observed that changing the framerate to 60hz makes the interface much more snappy. Thus - being  a programmer - I asked myself if the interface update frequency is in any way linked to the framerate. For instance, there could be somewhere a constant defining that switching from one menu point to the next takes 60 frames. Thus it would take one second at 60hz and two at 30hz. Of course, such a behaviour would be the result of a design flaw as a simple division would render the interface independent of the framerate

Has anyone noticed this as well or even stopped the time for interface transitions with different framerates?

Regards and thanx in advance

I believe this had been a known issue on the Live Hub… the UI animations were rendered at 60fps.  If the screen display was at 24fps, then the UI was very slow, beacuse it still had 60 individual animation frames to display, but they took 2.5 seconds to play instead of only 1.

I thought WD had changed this on the Live Hub’s firmware.

Perhaps the animations never got changed for the Live and Live Plus.  If not, this should be addressed by WD.

Thank you  ! That’s exactly what I thought. Sorry, I forgot to mention that the device used is a WDTV Live, Firmware 1.05.04 (the effect appeared with all firmware versions so far).

By the way, from your response I understood that the animations are not generated (rendered on the fly) but are presaved pictures. This makes sense and explains a lot as it would be difficult to have one animation set fit all framerates without stutter (same as the 3:2 pulldown). I think the way to go should be to have the animation set reflect the most used framerate (24) not the highest (60).

Nevertheless, thanx again for the clarification  !
