SN770 2TB - BSOD when plugged in Gen4 slot

Hello,

I am facing constant BSODs (critical process died) with my SN770 2TB drive when it is connected to Gen4 slot. It works for a few minutes and then disappears.

There are two M.2 slots on my Gigabyte z490m mobo, one Gen3 and one Gen4.
There are no problems when it is in Gen3 slot, but obviously this will limit maximum speeds.
I also have a SN550 Gen3 which works without issues in both slots.

Only to add that to initialize it for the first time, I had to put it in Gen3 slot. It was giving an error and would not initialize when in Gen4.

I have tried the following without any results:

  • Updated SN770 firmware through WD Dashboard
  • Updated mainboard BIOS (F23)
  • Tried HMB registry mod

My setup:
i7 11700f
Gigabyte z490m (F32 BIOS)
Windows 11 Pro 23H2 22631.4751
SN770 2GB WDS200T3X0E

Any ideas ?

I have seen lots of problems with Windows and WD and Samsung SSD and Windows 11

Could be an issue as your motherboard is 10gen Intel with an 11 gen refresh CPU

Yes, it is a possibility…

I have upgraded CPU from 10th gen to 11th specifically to be able to use 2nd M.2 slot on the mobo. I am using both slots now, but it is a pity Gen3 drive is in Gen4 slot and Gen4 drive in Gen3 slot…

I have also see critical process died errors on 13th gen machines so traced it to a windows bug that has been fixed in windows 11 24h2 and the cumulative updates

my 13th gen machine supports PCIe 4.0 SSD fine

you may need to do a fresh install of windows and updates before installing anything else
check advanced for drivers etc
