Smartware Backup of My Book Duo to its own external USB disk

When using smartware, if we backup the contents of My Book Duo to a disk connected to My Book Duo’s own external USB ports, does the backup data flow over the PC that the My Book Duo is connected to, or does it flow via th USB connection betwwen themselves?
