My mistake; even though my Windows 7 system recognizes the 3TB drive, the HBA is required to give normal performance:
3TB Caviar Green w/o HBA:
3TB Caviar Green with HBA:

Interesting, I would like to know if the same thing happens with Motherboards that natively support 3TB drives without the need of the controller card…
