Slow deleting files on My Book World Edition II (white light)

Hi,

I often find myself sitting waiting for my NAS. Files can be copied or moved with relatively acceptable speeds, but simultaneously shuffling data both ways seems more problematic. And now, even worse - deleting files takes forever. Is this really a normal speed? Clearing 10% of the drive space, taking 2 full days?

What on earth is it that takes all this time? Does Windows have anything to do with it, or is it just the drive itself? Are there other ways of manipulating files that takes less time?

(WDC MBWE II 6 TB via ethernet to router, then wifi to Win7 x64 PC)

Some power users delete files directly using SSH in order to bypass the server/client negotiation request.

But SSH is not available out-of-the-box, is it?

(Are there even safe ways of getting there, if you don’t want to hassle with non-standard undocumented solutions that you forget until next time you deal with the unit?)
