Hi, you might have some corrupted files in the hard drive and that’s why it is taking so long to finish. Try to stop the defrag process and then run a DLG test to rule out any possible hardware damage.
How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows
so if i try the quick test its says fail
and if i try the extended test it takes forever
should i do the extended test?
Run the quick test again, then click on the word “fail”. It should tell you exactly where the problem is.
*** Based on my own past experience…
First : I would try copying the files on the disk to a backup DVD or other hard drive
as soon as possible. -You may have to reformat the drive to get back to a useable
condition : or ( worst case ) be prepared for a total loss of data.
If the file system is corrupt , you might have a bigger problem.
If you can’t just do the regular “copy” or “move” functions, or they cannot locate files,
I have used Piriform’s ‘Recuva’ utility to retrieve many files from a failing
disk drive. ( not a WD ) http://www.piriform.com/recuva
when i try to do the test its says
06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!
