Shipping Concern

I received a WD Blue 2TB 3.5 inch internal HDD from a WD digital authorized partner, Amazon.com. I have not opened the WD box yet.

- The WD product packaging is intact, sealed, but slightly crushed.

- The WD box was shipped via USPS, inside of an Amazon envelope / mailer, without any additional padding / bubble wrap around the WD box.

It’s clear the envelope (with the WD box inside) was tossed around during transit.

WD customer service said: 1. they put additional padding around the product box when they ship. 2. If I am concerned I can return it to Amazon and get a replacement product or 3. Try it, and if it fails under warranty (after the 30 days Amazon return period) i can get a replacement from them BUT it will be a recertified hdd, not new.

Should I be concerned about potential damage to the HDD?

Yes, I’d be mildly concerned but not automatically alarmed. A 3.5-inch drive like the WD Blue 2TB 3.5-inch Internal HDD has delicate internal components, and while the retail box is designed to absorb minor bumps, an unpadded mailer doesn’t offer much shock protection if it was tossed around. Even if the seal is intact, hard drives don’t like sudden drops before installation. The part most people don’t mention is this: you have zero way to know if it took a hard impact during shipping until weeks or months later when bad sectors start appearing. Personally, since you haven’t opened it yet and Amazon returns are easy, I’d swap it for peace of mind. It’s much better to start with a drive you’re fully confident in than risk ending up with a recertified replacement later.
