Setting up a new laptop

I am trying to setup my new laptop to access mycloud home to link as a drive in windows 11 explorer. I am connected to the same home network router as my existing laptop. Under ‘network’ I have mycloud-xxxxxx showing, but when I try and access it, it tells me it is not available.

On my current laptop when I click on the same network name, it brings up a login box and then opens the drive and allows me to a working drive, usually Z, that I can then open as a normal folder under explorer.

Has anyone any idea what is wrong, and how to get around this.

Thanks.

Have you looked at the User Manual for the My Cloud Home? Is this what you own?

My Cloud Home User Manual

Yes I have read that, and also online, but the most relevant are out of date since they stopped supporting the web app.

What OS is on your old laptop? Is it WIn10? What exact error message do you get when it fails?

On your new laptop, open a Command Prompt as Admin. Type “net view \\mycloud-xxxxxx” (without the quotes). Do you see the list of available shares? If not, what error? If you do, in File Explorer, rt-click on Network or My Computer and select Map Network Drive. Select Z: as the drive. Enter the UNC for the share, like \\mycloud-xxxxxx\. Check reconnect at sign in. You can check remember my credentials at the login screen if you want.

You *may* need to verify/alter SMB signing requirements. Here’s the MS page to verify/set.

Win 11 Pro on both laptops.

Using Command Admin prompt gives “system error 53”

Mycloud-xxxxxx is showing in explorer under Network as a Computer. Right clicking gives the following options.

Expand

Connect with remote desktop connection

Pin to start

Pin to quick access.

All give a network error when clicked on, “windows cannot access \\mycloud-xxxxxx”

Hmmm… try again using the IP Address instead on \\mycloud-xxxxx

Also make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the new laptop.

What version of Win11 is on your old laptop? Settings/System/About then under Windows info. The new one should be 25H2. What’s the “old” one.

Also check on the old one to see if SMB 1.0 client is installed. Settings/System/Optional Features/More Windows Features.

Tried that and the error is slightly different. “Network path not found”

File and print sharing is on.

Both are running 11pro 25H2, in fact the old one is running a slightly later OS build due to the fact I was part of the ‘insider’ programme, BUT the mycloud has run on that ok since earlier versions.

SMB 1.0 is off on both, and SMB direct is on, for both, so that shouldn’t make a difference.

As far as I can see, both laptop settings seem to be the same.

Double check Windows Firewall setting. I’m running out of things to suggest.

Firewall settings are not blocking anything obvious, and my security suite has the same settings on both machines.

I can access mycloud through the web browser, so all is not lost, it is just less convenient than having it as a drive on the laptop.

I am considering setting up myself as a new user with one of my other emails and then seeing if I can get it to accept that. If so I can copy over files. Not sure it will work though. It may help if I can find a way to delete the mycloud-xxxxxx that is showing under network, but can’t find a way.

How to Access and Map a WD Network Drive on Windows 11

Yes it is..

Edited to apologise. This is not the version I have. Mine is WD Mycloud Home.

I’m still trying to solve this. I have tried everything I can think of, read through all relevant chapters in the manual, and now at a total loss as to what to do next.

If there is a way to remove the reference to the mycloud-xxxxxx under network, then maybe I could process the ‘how to access and Map the drive’ but I suspect the only way is through the registry, and I’m not confident enough to play around in there.

One other possibility before I finish setting up the other software I use, is to do a factory reset on the new laptop and then instead of copying over the windows settings backup, do a clean setup and then hopefully I can access the mycloud server.

Unless anyone has other ideas.

If you own a WDMYCLOUD then you don’t have a My Cloud Home! If you looked at the first link I sent you then you would have seen the images of a My Cloud Home.

What firmware do you have on your My Cloud?

I have two WDMYCLOUDS, a 1st generation and a 2nd generation.

This image is from my 1st generation and can only be used on my home network.

This image is from my 2nd generation, has OS5, and can be used on the internet.

Which one do you have?

Definitely a mycloud-home, see belowI must apologise though for not paying too much attention to the pictures, more interested in the text. I have always been reading the correct links to the manual.

The MyCloud HOME and WDMyClouds are totally different devices that have entirely different operating systems.

The WDMyClouds, which include the older 1st and 2nd generation devices Cat0w writes about runs a stripped Linux OS, very similar to what is running on the “bigger” NAS units WD sells. The HOME devices. . . run on something else entirely.

I don’t know much about the HOME line, but if a new laptop is giving you connection trouble, then my first approach would be to look into the SMB signing issue pointed out by Saudade above.

I have worked through all above suggestions and the new laptop is still not allowing me access as a network drive.

Also now to complicate matters, my original laptop has updated win11 and now is not allowing access either.

All is not lost as I can view through a web browser though working on files this way is less convenient.

I think maybe I will not get back the ability to have Mycloud Home link directly to my laptop through a network drive.
