Search on the my Cloud

Is there a way to search for a file on the My Cloud ?
This is a file that I am not sure it’s location but I am 100% sure I have it on the My Cloud

Hello,

At the moment there’s no option to create a search.

You can add this to the ideas board to see if that can be implemented on the future.

If you are using windows you can use the windows explorer. Open windows explorer and open the My Cloud folder. Then use the search bar in the upper right corner.
Another way is if you can ssh into the MC then you can cd / then use the find . -name “filename” -print
be aware that the file name is case sensitive.

Looks like I’m going to have to learn a little LINUX and with a little knowledge of LINUX I’m guessing I will get into ALOT of trouble when I “BRICK” the WD My Cloud device (I like the look of the “My Cloud” NAS so it will be a nice ornament on my shelf after I add some seashells to it). Do I VOID the WARRANTY if I “BRICK” it? I hope not…

I wish Western Digital FIX the WD My Cloud by adding a FILE SEARCH feature to it. It’s almost (although not quite) useless without a FILE SEARCH ( or any kind of search) capability.

Of course the easy option when I’m 1200 miles from my NAS WD My Cloud device it to hop on a plan a log into my Windows machine that is on the SAME network as the WD My Cloud and do a search from the Windows machine after I find my WD My Cloud device in File Explorer (or Windows Explorer) under Networks.

Easy…
NOT

Does this reply improve the conversation? Only if WD “Fixes” the problem. Maybe SEAGATE will come up with a good NAS. I can dream can’t I?

No, the easy solution would have been to use the WebDAVMod that would allow one to remotely map their My Cloud in Windows File Explorer and from there one should be able toy perform a search (which might be slow) for files on the My Cloud.

Or one could have setup some sort of VPN or even Remote Desktop connection to your local network and access the My Cloud that way using Windows File Explorer.

Or one can add their opinion to one of the following threads in the Cloud Ideas subforum and hope that WD eventually gets around to adding a search option to the remote apps/programs…

Or any of the other threads asking for the search feature.

I think it is actually negligent to not put a search in the mycloud.com interface. I bought an 8TB drive and no search. Had I know this I would have NEVER bought the product. NEGLIGENT. As far as using Windows Explorer, you would then need all data on the drive to be public or it seems you cannot see through Win 10 from what I can tell.

Not sure what you mean by all data need to be Public to search in Windows 10. I have no problems searching files using Windows File Explorer in Windows 10 to search both Public and Private Shares on the local network.

Oddly enough you can search on the phone app (at least the iPhone app you can), so you could use that as a quick way to locate a file, then go there directly using the web interface on a PC if you want to work on that file.

They seem to be aware of a need for search as it’s on the app, so I am quite puzzled why they have no such feature on the web interface - clearly the back-end infrastructure to perform remote searches is there.

BUMP. Still no search function on WD

Amazing that there is no search function on the web interface. I’m using a chromebook and this is obviously frustrating. Even the Android app is crashing when I try to launch it using my Pixelbook.

Especially since a text parser that calls [find] should be pretty simple to implement.
Naturally though, WD does not know how to sanitize inputs to prevent somebody from putting “&& [some other command]” on the input line, and getting the mycloud to do dangerous things-- which is probably why they have not implemented something like that.

bump, still no search.

WD files our reasonable suggestions into a suggestions box that is suspended above an industrial grade paper shredder.

You can search on your mycloud over SSH with [find]

The syntax is:

find [directory to start seaching in] -name [filename to find]

eg

find /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Public -name *.jpg

It will return all the paths and filenames that return a match for that string.

@Wierd_w Thanks. I believe this is a stretch.

I used ftpuse to mount the drive remotely, and indexed it with “everything”. Lightning fast search and access.

Yes, security might be an issue but my drive is behind a commercial grade firewall, so it might be less likely.

I will follow the link below to enable sftp

BUMP - THIS STARTED IN DEC 2015 AND NOW ITS JULY 2019.

SOMEONE BUMP THIS IN YEAR 2023 SO WE CAN LAUGH ABOUT IT

Useless My cloud. If I want to share a specific file, how can I find it and then share it? Totaly useless. Total ■■■■.
