Scan error since recent firmware update

I recently updated the firmware (see attached png’s for both sys fw and presentation of error.

since the update i started to notice the drive was extremely active with either read or writes even though i knew i was not accessing the drive at that time. after review i noticed the scan was either in processing state or error state.

it just keeps cycling between the 2 states.

ive tried rebooting hard and soft and even did sys factory restore, sys only. rebooted and yet still massive activity and failure on scanning.

anyone have any ideas please?? !!

further update:

as per png 3, all looked like it was going well, then as per png 4, not so good, back to square one.

I have the same problem and i’m still searching.

There is a problem with some items i think.  You can use the drive normal in the windows and see and use the items normal?

yes, just anoying drive activity constant and very slow. im currently running a full diagnostic to see its the FAT and maybe some files corrupt. im off 2 bed finally, i’ll check in morning as its been running for must be 10hrs now.

Same here, I did a reboot (via the dashboard) after 20 hours of content scanning. When the MyCloud came on-line the scan took 1 hour and is on Idle for several hours now.

Logged a ticked yesterday [Deleted] asking WD what the solution is, so waiting for the reply.

Thanks…im all ears, waiting patiently for your reply.

on a seperate point, only when you have time; I must be being a complete ■■■■■ (dont answer that!) but i didn’t see anywhere that i could raise a ticket for support other than this forum… how did you raise one?

when yuo log in to dashboard, click on the question mark top righ. collect the logs (there is a check mark) and open a new ticket.

Sorry I have not received any response from WD yet, the helpdesk must be buzzy

I suggest that you reboot the MyCloud from the dashboard. The reboot helped me to get the content scan back to 1 hour although with the error message. After the content scan the Mycloud behaved as what I think is normal.

Done all the tests the dashboard enables you to do and no errors reported from the hardware. When using the Mycloud  the LED is blue all the time, I have turned it off now, so that suggest (I think) the hardware is okay.

When you would like to start fresh you can also shut down the MyCloud and power it up again. Perhaps an option also I do not know.

Update I received an email from helpdesk.

"I have escalated your case for one of our support specialist to contact you as soon as possible.

Hi thanks for above info.

Just posted this to support; for info only:

Dear xxxxxx

I felt I should update you. As you know I had run the diagnostics since Sunday and this morning they were still stuck at 90% so my patience finally got the better of me. I chose to reboot from the UI option. It took some time to reboot but finally came back up but I then had to go out. I came back this evening to what looks like a stable mycloud. There is no inappropriate disc activity, the scan section of the Home page UI says it is IDLE.  My only issue seemed to be for some reason the twonky server had forgotten where all my music lived but after re-adding the folder sharing it looks like that’s back also. Whilst everything is looking far better, I do not think the case should be closed as I think it is important we find out why the device did this in the first place and ensure it does not happen again but I felt the update was an important one.

Further update:

All seemed well as mentioned on the phone, until today. The unit sits next to me in my living room. It burst into disk activity once more and knowing I was not accessing it I investigated. Logged into mycloud, nothing obvious. Logged into twonky and it said it was streaming, but I have nothing in ‘public’ and I know I was not accessing it so needed to find out who was accessing the unit and more to the point requesting streamed media which they shouldn’t have access to. I couldn’t find anything on either UI that told me what or who the box was doing something for…is this feature somewhere?

Anyway, I decided to login into the box via an xterm emulator. Don’t panic; I made no changes and in fact decided to log straight out as there was no GUI interface, only the command line and whilst many lives ago I used to work with Unix servers, that was literally, a life ago so as I could not remember anything useful I decided to log out. Being paranoid and as I did not like the idea it was saying ‘streaming’ I disconnected the network cable. Whilst the disk activity did reduce a little, it still remained so not convinced it was truly stream activity. I was about to reboot the box, so I plugged it back into the network, went into the UI, was about to reboot, but the disk activity virtually stopped. I don’t like things that can’t be explained so I had another look in both UI’s and noticed both showed I no longer had any media types stored. The twonky said zero to video, songs and photo’s but also it had nothing registered as media locations any longer. Once I added both directories back as my music and photos and  ALL I have done was request it to rebuild…no response. I then asked it to re-scan, it then burst into action and eventually I got my stats back; songs-5286 photos-7457. A re-login on the mycloud interface eventually showed the same. I’m intrigued how the box lost my twonky config and removed all media references and then there is the weird ‘streaming’. I would be very appreciative if you can pass these further info onto your back office chaps.

Thanks

No solution from the WD helpdesk today, sad but that’s what it is for today.

The error was a known issue with Windows 7 back-up, so I needed to call Microsoft for the solution. This because Smartware backup had worked on my system.

However before the last firmware update it was not a problem to use Windows Back-up, no response from the WD helpdesk associate on my question about this.

Still scan errors when writing a single file or an attempt to back up to the MyCloud. When the scan is running the Mycloud is very slow in accessing the HDD, unworkable for me.

My plan of attack is; shutdown the Mycloud and wait for an firmware update and give that a go.

If there isn’t a firmware update in the near future I will be one of the unlucky customers that have bought a lemon. I think there are people out there that are happy with the product , good on you.
