Remove my passport to take macbook to meeting

i often properly eject my passport (wdblpg 2 TB) temporarily to take macbook (not shut down) with Catalina to meeting. i return & plug my passport back in, but nothing happens. LED is on but drive not recognized, neither in dessktop or disk utility, as if it’s not there. only way to fix is to shut macbook down & restart. what a pain!
