Versus PORT FORWARDING, Is RELAY less secure? Is RELAY not as fast? What are the advantages and disadvantages of PORT FORWARDING vs RELAY? Thank you.
Hi,
Please refer to the following KB article: Error
Thank you.
Although the WDC knowledge-base names the various types of connection, it does not (or I could not find) a description of the advantages and disadvantages between them, especially regarding speed & security.
Relay is slower and less reliable that port forwarding. It usually happens when you have an issue with UPNP (eg double NAT).
Thank you sktn77a. I setup my UltraEX2 basically in its default settings. I see I have an option to Port Froward. Looks like I need to setup such a service, with someone like DYNDNS(?), to use that part of the preferences. Isnât having a permanent address less secure than the device finding the net via Relay? Iâm sure I just got that back to front!
You donât have to do all that. The default setting should get you port forwarded remote access without messing with any manual settings. If not, then your network is the issue and manually taking over may not help.
Thanks for the reply!
If I go to my dashboard/settings/network, at the bottom of those settings is Port Forwarding, and a button to Add (and a link to support).
I click Add, and select the 443 option (thatâs more secure, right?).
Then, after some activity, I see HTTPS underneath Port Forwarding.
Along side Port Forwarding is a details button. If I click that, status âchecksâ, but always fails.
Iâm not sure why this fails. It could be my Router, perhaps?
I will read up on the topic over the next two weeks to help myslef understand whatâs going on, but I do appreciate your input. Thanks again.
And just read thisâŠ
For port forwarding rules to work without additional configurations
- The router must support UPnP and it should enabled.
- The network should be single NAT.
âŠmy next thing to check on.
Thatâs the key to getting started. Then, if you are so inclined, you can do manual port forwarding, etc.
