My PC has been dormant over a year, still running XP, never upgraded. How can I reformat my passport (currently NTFS) to Xfat so I can transfer all the files from the PC to my mac. Includes lots of large audio files. Thank you in advance and apologies if this issue was addressed elsewhere; I searched and could not locate an answer.

Windows XP does not support formatting to exFAT on its own. You will need a third party formatting utility. I’d recommend a web search.
or install NTFS (read and write) on your mac ?
