Is there any way of recovering an accidentally deleted smartware backup file?

Only if you have a data recovery software able to work with a NAS formatted as EXT3.

Thanks - can you recommend one?  And if you install on host computer, it will read the NAS Drive - WD Live?

Would a USB to Ethernet connector work whereby could connect My Book Live to PC and see files?
