Reboot and select proper boot device

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. Just purchased a WD My Book Essential 3TB. When I have the drive plugged in my machine will not boot into windows and I get the error message: “Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key”. If the drive is not plugged in Windows 7 boots just fine. I can then plug the drive in and have no issues. The following are things I have tried to get the machine to boot while the drive is plugged in:

  1. I have reset my BIOS to default settings.
  2. I have verified that the boot order in BIOS does not have the external drive. Only the internal drive and CD/DVD tray are enabled.
  3. I have updated the firmware on the drive.
  4. I have reformatted the drive.
  5. I have exchanged the drive for a new one.
  6. I have run a registry optimizer to take care of any errors.

Any help as to why this drive will not allow Windows 7 to boot will be grately appreciated.

Hello,

I recommend that you go to your BIOS and look for a setting called “Boot from USB device” or "USB Legacy support: and disable this. It is possible that the computer is trying to boot from the external drive. Please do not disable this options if you have a USB mouse or keyboard since this will make it inoperable. It is also possible that your System BIOS cannot handle drive capacities greater than 2.2 TB.

BIOS are all different make sure the CD/DVD is first and the system HD is next. It sounds like something in the BIOS settings
