Question on running WD My Book Essential 1 TB USB 3.0 (WDBACW0010HBK) 24/7

Hello,

I am planning to connect my WD My Book Essential 1 TB USB 3.0 (WDBACW0010HBK) to my Raspberry Pi computer and set it as a NAS and run it 24/7. Power to the Pi and WD My Book are coming from UPS.

WD My Book would be accessed via network by my Windows PC, WD Streaming Media Player and Sony EX720 TV.

Is it safe to run WD My Book 24/7?

You can do this, however it is not recommended because the tendency of the drive overheating is high.

By default, drive goes to standby mode if not used for a certain amount of time.

Wouldn’t  that take care of over heating?

Yes it would, just make sure that the drive has proper ventilation. Treat it like a baby.
