Question about subtitles in MKV format

I have a lot of HD videos in MKV format containers and they include subtitles, will the WD TV be able to play those subtitles? or will I need to get a secondary SRT file? I am looking at buying a used WD TV sometime soon and I just wanted to know beforehand if it will work. thank you.

You should buy the LIVE SMP which supports Vobsub, SRT and PGS (when properly subbed).

I will be buying the WD TV Live as it’s the only one available on Craigslist for the price I can afford. does the first gen WD TV Live support subs?

To answer your question… Yes it will playback Subtitles.

But, it depends on what “Format”  Subtitles your Video Collection has.

I would recommend using MediaInfo to get Information about your  Videos and find out what Format Subtitles they are before purchasing the WDTV Live.

According to the User Manual …the WDTV Live  only Supports:

SRT, **bleep**, SSA, SUB and SMI

That’s funny, the Second Subtitle Format got Censored ?  Maybe it’s used in Adult Movies ? :smileyvery-happy:

Or mabye it’s pronounced as some other word for people’s behind?

The original LIVE has trouble with PGS subs from Blurays so you’re gonna have to convert them to VobSub or SRT. I would definitely advise against buying it. Aren’t there cheap players, I mean, I’ve seen players with Realtek chipset for 50 Euros, should be even cheaper in the US.
