Question about OS 5 upgrade notifications

Hi! I keep getting email notifications about the need for me to upgrade to OS 5. The messages start with this:

Upgrade to My Cloud OS 5 to keep remote access!

and contains this:

Western Digital continuously evaluates and improves our hardware, software, and services as security standards evolve. As a result, we’ve determined that it’s necessary to end support for prior generations of My Cloud OS, including My Cloud OS 3. You should act now to protect your content.

On January 15, 2022 , support for prior generations of My Cloud OS will end. You must upgrade to My Cloud OS 5 to continue to access your device remotely. My Cloud OS 5 contains critical security updates, and support for it is guaranteed through 2026. If you don’t upgrade your device, you’ll only be able to access it locally. After January 15, 2022 , remote access, security updates, or technical support will no longer be provided. Check out our recent My Cloud updates to learn more.

Does anyone know if these notifications are being “blindly” sent out to all customers? I’ve already upgraded to OS 5 and the email account that received the message above, has already been setup to use “os5.mycloud.com” to access our NAS remotely. So, I’m not sure why this account would be notified, unless that’s just a “blanket” notification being sent out to everyone.

Thanks in advance!

Peace…

My Cloud OS3 End of Service | Western Digital

It would appear so but only WD can answer for certain. Most of us here are end users not WD staff. WD is for what ever reason frequently sending these OS5 update notice emails to what I can only assume are those email accounts registered through/with their MyCloud.com OS3 web portal. Seems like I’m getting one every week or so now to several email accounts. Not sure how one of the accounts is getting the emails, I don’t think I’ve used it on the My Cloud(s) or in the MyCloud.com web portal. (shrugs)

Yes, they are being blindly sent out. Spam spam spam.

Hard to believe we trust these people with our backups.

And the LAST thing I want is remote access to my backups.

I agree with this. Since 20th of November, I got 6 emails regarding this and I am using the My Cloud OS 5 for a long time.

Same problem here. Keep getting these mails from WD despite the fact that I’ve upgraded to os5. Surly WD knows if a user have had the upgrade??. To make things worse it is a “no reply” mail.

There is an “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the emails.

Yes I’ve seen that but I’m afraid it means I will never get any other notifications from WD over other, maybe, important subjects.

One thing you can do is write a filter rule to filter the upgrade notifications to a folder or to the trash. That should keep them out of your inbox.

Peace…

It’s pure CYA. “You can’t say we didn’t warn you”!

@MrRogersNeighborhood
Are you trying to say that an e-mail or notification about a product you own and use Spam?

Spam Definition (techterms.com)

Not trying to say anything. I think I said exactly what I meant.

You cited someone’s definition of “spam” as if that settles the issue. Thanks, but no.

Sending me irrelevant emails about an OS upgrade that I’ve already done, and without clear instructions for unsubscribing – that’s a form of spam.

As it turns out, it seems WD subscribes users automatically with each new OS upgrade. When you unsubscribe, it appears to be for the current release only. The unsubscribe confirmation has a very specific scope – the current OS upgrade.
