Hi! I have our MyCloud NAS, running OS5, configured to do USB backups. I have some backup jobs setup to backup various user accounts and I manually run USB backups periodically. I store the USB hard drive off-site. Anyway, today, I upgraded the GoodSync server application and realized I haven’t taken any backups of the NAS, itself, such that installed applications would be preserved if I ever needed to re-install OS5.
So, my questions are:
What is the best way to backup OS5, itself, including installed applications?
If our MyCloud NAS won’t start, what’s the best way to get OS5 re-installed?
How would I restore our MyCloud NAS from a backup of OS5, if that’s even possible?
Thanks for the reply. I read the information at the page you posted the link to and the process of backing up shares is described. I already have jobs created to backup shares. I’m asking about backing up OS5 itself so I can recover the OS and the applications I installed, like GoodSync, in the event the NAS doesn’t boot.
What specific My Cloud unit are you using? One of the multi bay My Cloud models or the single bay/single drive second generation My Cloud?
While this may not answer your questions about restoring the OS itself, there is the option to save the System Configuration settings in the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings > Utilities > System Configuration section. It may however possibly only restore the system settings and not any third party apps you have installed since initial setup.
The system configuration area allows you to save a configuration file or import an existing configuration file. This is useful if you perform a system restore and want to maintain your current configurations.
For the single bay My Cloud models there isn’t an official way to restore a new hard drive or existing one if the operating system is wiped or corrupted and the Dashboard (or SSH) isn’t accessible. There are various unofficial “unbrick” methods detailed both in the OS5 subforum and OS3 subforums to restore a single bay My Cloud’s operating system. All of those unbrick restoration methods for the single bay My Cloud are; “use at your own risk”. One can search for those past “unbrick” discussions using the forum search feature (magnifying glass icon top right).
Thanks for the info and sorry for the delayed response. I’m using a single bay My Cloud NAS. I already do USB backups of the files we store on the NAS. I’ll checkout some of the “unbrick” methods you mentioned to get familiar with what’s involved.
