I want to advise anyone who may be interested about the performance of my 2TB My Cloud NAS server.
I use both Windows 7 Pro and 2 machines with different versions of Linux. I use the My Cloud as a backup for my personal data and for my photos, videos and music (over 300 CDs). I also stream directly from the My Cloud to a Samsung Smart TV or a Raspberry Pi running XBMC, which is connected to the TV via HDMI.
My current network is wired, 10/100MB through an old Netgear DS08 switch. I have just ordered a GS206-100PES, which is also from Netgear but it is a Gigabit switch. This is due to arrive next week, however I thought that the results of my testing today warrants posting.
I have a 20MP camera which I use mainly for stills but with the occasional few minutes of video. Each picture is about 2.9MB in size. I copied 3329 photos/videos in 79 directories, a total of 13325073 bytes (about 13GB) to the My Cloud. It took 29 minutes, and reported a transfer rate of 7.9MB/s, which I consider good. After scanning and creating thumbnails, the data size was 14051184 bytes, about 14GB. I waited for the scanning to finish and then started a download of the same photos. It took 27 minutes, reportedly transferring at 8.8MB/s.
Copying the same data from the WD to the same PC running Windows 7 (the PC dual boots, so the hardware was identical for each test) took 26 mins with a reported transfer speed of 8.11MB/s. One big difference here is that Windows uses CIFS or Samba for the network share, whereas I am using NFS over UDP for Linux.
The My Cloud server is neat, small, and totally silent in operation. Very wife-friendly.
WD support has been very responsive, as have the staff here on this community board. I couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase. To anyone unsure, read the PC magazines/professonal reviews (as I did before I bought).
To those who seem to want to do nothing more than complain, if you PM me to tell me that “WD firmware is buggy” I will block you. WD firmware is based on Linux and I am a retired systems support specialist with years of experience and respect for IBM AIX (Linux, basically). And I don’t believe that anyone would go out and buy a My Cloud, brick it and then go looking for a bulletin board to complain about it within hours of the purchase.
When I get my Gigabit switch I will post the performance if anyone is interested.
