Problem with Media servers vs. Network shares

Is it normal for MP4’s and M2TS files to play under network shares, but not under media servers and AVI and MP3’s files to play under media servers, but not under network shares?

Not necessarily.

With a media server, the SERVER *and* the CLIENT must support the file type in question.

With a Network Share, only the CLIENT need support it; the server won’t care.

Also keep in mind that the file type isn’t the only thing that matters- the codec the files are encoded with matters just as much if not more.

Thanks Tony that got me going in the right direction. The server software I was using did not support some files. I ended up using MediaTomb which needed a little configuring to work, but now supports all of my files.
