Problem updating EX4100 to OS 5

I’m trying to follow the instructions to update to OS 5. My EX4100 is on the latest firmware (5.16.105).

I’m following the instructions here: Upgrade My Cloud OS 3 Firmware to My Cloud OS 5

I’m logged in to the dashboard and I get to step 3, which says to click the box “NEW OS 5 AVAILABLE.” I can find no such box. I check under all of the tabs, nothing.

I have to be missing something obvious. Help please!

Well, I don’t know if that was obvious, since I don’t see “OS 3” or “OS 5” anywhere on the dashboard, nor anywhere online that ties firmware number to OS number. (In my line of business “firmware” and OS releases are very different things.)

Anyway, I guess the automatic update process must have taken care of this a long time ago and I never noticed. Good to hear that I’m up to date.

Are we being a bit judgmental here, maybe? So yes, I didn’t realize that firmware 2.* meant “OS 3” and 5,* meant “OS 5.” Give me a break.

I have 10+ years on you in the software business. Add another 10 if you count student staff as an undergrad and then graduate research. Everything from “actual” firmware, to OS development, to big data processing. This is the first time that I’ve seen someone cloud the firmware and OS version concepts like this without explaining it up front.

And thanks for your opinion on automatic updates. Your reluctance is why there are so many devices out in the world that are petri dishes for hackers.

Sheesh. You’d think this was a Facebook comment thread. Good bye.

Well - - - -all the good natured banter aside. . . . .I also FIRMLY believe in not enabling automatic updates

  • They tend to happen at very inopportune times.

  • Every once in a while. . .a “bad” update comes along that causes real trouble (at best) or bricks (at worst) the device.

  • New updates tend to include new functionality. When I am trying to get something done, I don’t like being surprised by software that without any real warning acts differently.

OK, you’ve convinced me. I’ve turned off automatic updates.

Now I just need to check periodically for pending updates and maybe wait until they’ve been out for a while. Or WD says there’s something critical about it.

my personal horror story relates to an older system that I only use for media applications.

One day, I fired it up and Win10 decided that RIGHT NOW was the time to do an O/S upgrade. Took over the machine for an hour with the update. . . and the end result was a machine that didn’t boot.

Brief panic. . .very brief. . . as no data actually resides on the machine. All the relevant media files are on USB drives and the NAS.

But I did have to download an ISO from Microsoft and reload the entire O/S from scratch. Most annoying.
