Problem having OS see my "MY PASSPORT" drive

I have a WDBAAA5000ABL-00 500GB EXTERNAL drive. I plug in the unit and the little blue light shines so I expect that it is working to some extent or at least powers up but explorer does not show that drive. Is the a formatting or access program I can use to activate to allow the connection?
