Problem for cloning a 512 bytes sector size Hitachi disk to a WD5000BKPT (4Kbytes sector size)

Hi,

I bought a recent Sony SVF series laptop with Windows 8 64bits and a 500GB Hitachi disk containing several partitions (see below MSINFO32 infos).

Once laptop runnning and settings ok, I wanted to have a backup copy, meaning a clone of the disk and I bought for that a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BPKT disk.

I tried to do the clone operation with Acronis 2013, with EASUS 6.0, and with Disk Image XML, without success.

After some searches, it appear that the source disk has a 512 bytes sector size, and the WD destination disk a 4Kbytes sector size.

I put the WD disk on a Windows 7 machine and tried to format it as FAT Extended (512bytes) format. The operation seems succefull but once connected to the Windows 8 laptop, the clone operation once again failed with the same error (and MSINFO32 still indicate that the WD disk has a 4Kbytes sector size).

So, now what can I do ? How can I change, if this is possible, the destination disk sector size ?

Are you trying to do a sector by sector copy?

I expect that would give issues.

If you’re just doing a regular clone, ignoring free space etc. then there is no reason it shouldn’t work. After you image a 512 byte sector disk to an AF disk the partitions will be misaligned, it will still work but performance will be degraded. You need to use a separate piece of software to align the partitions. Additionally, if youwere to start with an AF disk and clone it, some software maintains alignment (clonezilla is one), but most do not, meaning if you clone 4k to 4k you need to align the clone after…

If you’re looking for a piece of software that can definately clone 512 byte to 4k the boot CD that Paragon has as part of their server tools works fine.
