What model drives are installed in WDBWWD0120KBK
WD Red Drives
Beware, the EX4 is SLOW! & missing key marketed features like NFS support and common RAID migrations.
These fourms are well documented with common user frustrations and buyer remorse. WD has become a more active listener on this fourm but development of this product has been apathetic.
Have you considered your alternatives like Synology, ReadyNAS, and ixSystems?

I have seen several past posts by sgallant04 touting other NAS vendors. Oddly, sgallant’s mention of other NAS vendors fails to mention one key point. Many of these other NAS vendors sell NASes that are indeed better performing, but also come at a price several hundred dollars higher. Lately some of these other vendors have started offering lower-priced models but those have the same underwhelming hardware and performance as WD’s My Cloud line. Also, though sgallant is correct about the now unsupported use of NFS networking feature, that is hardly an issue for most users, unless you are in an environment with Unix and Linux systems. Even then CIFS/Samba support is built in most Linux systems, so the missing NFS support is a tiny issue, if at all an issue.
And I aso find Synology to be a inferior product personally. QNAP has much better NAS offerings and is ranked higher than Synology or any other NAS brand at smallnetbuilder site’s rankings for 4-bay NASes. The only reason I mention this is because if one were to consider looking at other NAS brands, QNAP should be at the top of their list. But the most important thing I would like to point out is that I have frequented QNAP’s and Synology’s user forums, and they too are littered with user issues - so in my opinion sayng that WD NASes have a lot of user complaints is neither a full nor an accurate picture. There are plenty of satisfied WD NAS users and plenty of dissatisfied QNAP, Synology, etc NAS users.
As for WD My Cloud NAS line - they are a good value for their price range. Sure the processor is a bit underpowered and hence read-write speeds aren’t top-notch, but they are well above acceptable threshold. But I would recommend you check out a site like smallnetbuilder, which provides NAS ranking and also NAS reviews, if you haven’t done in-depth research on non-WD NAS products. And if you truly want to do more research, check out the user forums of some of the other NAS vendors - grass always looks greener on the other side.
OP here. OK guys (and gals as the case may be), I appreciate what y’all are trying to do. I am FULLY aware of the reviews of this box and I am fine(truly I am) with what they say. I’m not looking to have the fastest most performant system out (OK, yes I am, if it sold for the price of this unit). This is for home use, not SOHO or SMB. I’ve been in the game over 25 years and remember when 10MB hard drives cost >$300 so I go into this eyes wide open. I just need to create shared storage to keep my wife from complaining that I keep deleting her music and pictures every time I upgrade her machine with a bigger hard drive. I don’t but try telling her that ! My personal use will be with iSCSI ( I know, another further performance degradation).
I am a strictly a Windows nerdwork (OK, lets have no battles over that either)! So this unit supports everything I need it to.
So thanks to sgallant04 for letting me know that WD Red drives are used, and thanks to Cybernut1 for warning me about sgallant04. And in the immortal words of Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along!”
gregspeer - Sorry if somehow you got the notion my post was to argue with sgallant04. I was merely trying to provide you with some helpful info about the info contained in sgallant’s post. Wasn’t trying to fight with anyone. I contribute here when I can, not to settle any scores…just to help others out with info.
